Every family group can read its balance sheet. The harder question is what the balance sheet leaves out.
A dormant brand. A set of premises that has gone quiet. An archive, a mould library, a discontinued product line that once had a following. On the books these show up as nothing, or near it — and that number gets treated as the truth about their worth. It usually isn’t.
Key takeaways
- Dormant brands, premises and product lines are assets your balance sheet prices at zero — a demand problem, not a value verdict.
- The market reports zero because the asset is unstoried, not because it is worthless.
- Narrative impact is measurable: realised price, depth of demand, premium over category, and retell rate.
- The first step is an inventory of what you own but no longer sell — not a valuation.
Why the market reports zero
A price is only ever agreed among people who already want the thing. When the telling stops, demand goes quiet, and the value collapses to whatever a liquidator will pay for the parts. The asset looks finished. Usually it has simply lost its audience, not its worth. It is unstoried, not worthless — and those are different diagnoses with different treatments. You do not fix an audience problem with a lower price.
How we put a number on the invisible
Reviving a dormant asset is only worth doing if you can measure whether it worked. We hold the work to four markers:
- Realised price against baseline — what it fetches now versus what it fetched dormant.
- Depth of demand — how many buyers compete, not just the closing number.
- Premium over category — what the story adds above the going rate for the type.
- Retell rate — how many buyers repeat the story unprompted.
None of those appear on a balance sheet. All of them are real, and all of them move once the asset is storied again.
Finding yours
The first step is not a valuation; it is an inventory of what you own but no longer sell. Most owners are surprised by how much surfaces — and by how much of it was well regarded in its day. The question is never whether the thing existed. It is whether there is still an audience who would care, and a story strong enough to reach them.
